New business ideas and opportunities are not scarce. There are several sources that “bombard” every company with them.
Customers are typically major source also for new business opportunities. Unfortunately only in few companies there are procedures or processes how to handle them. Too often a new business opportunity is simply bypassed or a customer proposal is replied with a “not our business line” type of a response.
Partners and suppliers are also sources for new business ideas and opportunities. Usually they have learned what kind of solutions are worth taking up with partners and clients. If they learn that all that follows a new business proposition is nice to know conversations, they stop even taking up such topics not to mention other support in more advanced ways.
Research institutes and universities are least business sensitive even though in their projects there is often intrinsic business potential involved. If you are not ready and capable to refine that with your own measures, business issues tend to turn into questions of how to report convincingly to external financiers of a business potential that after a project is still as far from a business reality as before the project started.
Because of these new business barriers, filters and shields the atmosphere inside a company can be an opposite to external business rich reality. “We don’t have new business opportunities, all we can do is to save costs.”
That is a situation that can be called waste of business! Never before has there been more business opportunities than in modern times and never before has there been as much diversity in business as today.
Still many companies think of their business as a single “career” that they need to follow from dawn to dusk. Those companies have typically tried something new but failed and think of that as an indication that they need to stick to their old business. It doesn´t matter whether it is already 20 years since that “failure” took place and new business creation methods and practices have changed dramatically since then.
